Children need opportunities to attempt a question, make a mistake, and try again without feeling rushed. At home, the most helpful contribution is often a calm routine and an interested listener.
Ask about the approach
Instead of only checking the final answer, ask your child to describe what they tried. “Can you draw it?” or “Could you try a smaller number?” can open a path without giving away the solution.
If a learner is stuck on 18 × 7, invite them to break 18 into 10 and 8. Their drawing or explanation can reveal whether they understand multiplication as groups.
Make mistakes useful
A wrong answer can come from a misunderstood idea, a calculation slip, or a missed instruction. Look at the working together and identify one useful next step. Avoid labelling a child as naturally good or bad at mathematics.
Notice thinking in everyday life
Recipes, travel times, shopping quantities, and board games can spark mathematical conversations. Ask your child to estimate first and then explain how they checked. Keep the activity playful rather than making every moment a test.
Protect time for a break
If a question becomes frustrating, pause and return later. A shorter session with attention can be more useful than a long session spent guessing. Discuss persistent difficulties with the teacher so practice targets the underlying concept.
