What does AMC 10 test?
AMC 10 rewards flexible use of school mathematics. The interesting step is often a reorganisation: converting a word problem into a diagram, using a complement in counting, or noticing a factorisation that avoids a large calculation.
For Classes 8–10, it can be a useful extension when arithmetic and basic algebra are secure. A student does not need to collect every advanced topic before starting; they need enough fluency to think about the structure of an unfamiliar problem.
Eligibility and pattern
The MAA overview lists 25 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes for Grade 10 and below, with an age limit of under 17.5 on contest day. The scope excludes trigonometry and advanced algebra and geometry. Confirm the current binding rules before entry. MAA overview.
Use the American contest’s full name when registering. The Australian Mathematics Competition is a different event. A child’s Indian school class should be checked against the host’s eligibility interpretation instead of assuming identical international grade labels.
A and B papers, international entry and AIME
AMC 10 has A and B sittings. Participation choices must follow current MAA and host rules. Students in India should work through the authorised international route. Entry into later invitational competitions is not automatic. Registration · Policies.

Many problems combine two rows of this table. Therefore a preparation programme should eventually remove topic labels and require the learner to choose an approach.
Algebra: learn to choose the short route
Before expanding an expression, look for a difference of squares or a shared factor. Before solving two equations mechanically, compare their sum or difference. Before substituting large numbers, ask whether only a ratio or a product is needed.
These questions do not replace algebraic fluency; they make it useful. A student should still be able to perform the longer method, but learn when the problem offers a more revealing one.
Original example: a symmetric expression
Suppose x + 1/x = 3, where x is nonzero. Find x² + 1/x².
Square the given equality: x² + 2 + 1/x² = 9. Subtract 2 to obtain 7. There is no need to solve for x individually.
The example illustrates a common strategic habit: identify the expression being requested and transform the given information directly towards it. Solving for x would create unnecessary work. As an extension, derive x³ + 1/x³ using the same relationship. The result is 18, obtained from 3³ − 3 × 3. This is an original teaching example, not a released AMC 10 question.
How to prepare over a school term
In the first phase, repair calculation and notation gaps. Fractions, exponents and equations should not consume all the learner’s attention. Use short explanations to distinguish a valid shortcut from a remembered trick.
In the second phase, practise topic-based problems in increasing depth. Keep a small collection of methods and write when each method is appropriate. A useful entry might say, “Count the unwanted cases when they are simpler than the wanted cases.”
In the third phase, use mixed sets and full papers. Record not just whether a question was correct, but when the useful idea appeared. This reveals whether time management or conceptual understanding is the main bottleneck.
Pacing and response strategy
Seventy-five minutes allows more thought per problem than many school competitions, but it is still finite. Mark problems worth returning to and avoid letting one difficult question consume the entire middle of the paper.
Read the scoring instructions for the actual edition. Blank-answer credit and other scoring features can affect strategy, so do not apply rules remembered from a different contest. A good strategy begins with accurate work on accessible problems and ends with a deliberate review of unresolved responses.
What parents should look for in progress
Look for better decisions: a diagram drawn earlier, an expression simplified before substitution, or a counting problem split into complete cases. A higher score without clearer reasoning may not represent stable improvement.
