What is the American AMC 8?
AMC 8 offers a compact way to explore mathematical problem solving beyond routine exercises. Its name refers to the American Mathematics Competitions programme; it is not the Australian Mathematics Competition, which also uses the acronym AMC.
For a learner who enjoys arithmetic puzzles, visual relationships and short word problems, the format can provide a useful practice goal. The key is to choose work that stretches thinking without making every session a race.
Format and eligibility

Participation from India

Why short questions can still be difficult
A small amount of text may hide a change of unit or a condition such as “at least”. A visual question may need a rotation rather than a formula. A probability question may become easier after listing a smaller set of equally likely possibilities.
When a student gets stuck, ask for a simpler version. Replace a large number with 5, reduce a complicated arrangement to three objects, or draw the first few cases. Then ask which observations survive when the original size is restored.
Original example: probability by listing outcomes
A fair six-sided die is rolled once. What is the probability that the result is greater than 2 and even?
The possible results are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The results satisfying both conditions are 4 and 6. There are two favourable outcomes out of six equally likely outcomes, so the probability is 1/3.
The word “and” matters. Counting every even result would include 2, which fails the first condition. Ask the learner to change “and” to “or” and compare the new set. This original introductory example demonstrates careful interpretation; it is not an official AMC 8 problem.
Preparing for a forty-minute paper
Start with untimed work. Record a brief explanation even when the contest only asks for an option. Without this step, a guessed answer can be mistaken for understanding.
Next, use short mixed sets. The purpose is to practise recognising which questions have an immediate entry point and which need more thought. Compare accuracy before comparing speed. A fast response based on a misread condition is not progress.
Once the student can work steadily, attempt a full paper under the official conditions for that edition. Read the scoring instructions before choosing an answering strategy. Do not import a blank-answer or penalty rule from AMC 10 or a different competition.
A weekly routine for middle-school learners
Use one session for number work, one for geometry or counting, and one for a short mixed challenge. Keep an error notebook with a sentence explaining each mistake. “I used the total number of balls instead of the number of red balls” is more useful than “careless”.
At the end of the week, ask the learner to teach one solution back to you. A clear explanation with a drawing is evidence of understanding. If the explanation becomes a sequence of memorised instructions, revisit the underlying concept before adding harder problems.
Reading scores and planning the next step
A single paper is only a snapshot. Compare patterns across several attempts: which topics remain difficult, how much work is independent, and whether errors are becoming more specific. Avoid comparing scores from remembered papers with fresh attempts.
